I'm getting ready to register my 601 with a Corvair engine.   I looked at the FAA database to see how others had handled what is essentially a custom build.  I found only 2 Zeniths registered with Corvairs, and I know there are many more than that flying.  There are a lot of planes registered with what appears to be an amateur/experimental label for the engine.  I'm wondering if this is what people have been using for Corvairs, or for auto-conversions more generally.

Ron,

Although far from an expert ,I'll tell you what little I know having recently registered my 650.

First, You are not registering the engine, you are registering the 601 as an EAB kit built plane and you will list the corvair as the engine.  EAA has an excellent  certification kit you can buy that has all the forms and explains in detail how to register. You must also have your N number reserved prior to registering. At the time of my registration I had not decided on an engine so the engine info. is listed as unknown on my registration.
