Well, duh... I found the link to the 601/HD.HDS/UL kit/assembly pricing... wasn't right in front of me, but once I got to the correct page it was certainly plain enough... thanks...

Side question -- has anyone ever used the steel-bungee "system" on the main gear?

Chatted with Zenith briefly on Friday -- they said yes they still sell CH601HD parts/components -- only caution from them was that depending on the part, might be a wait since they don't warehouse parts at the level of the more active models; didn't ask about pricing -- now, has me thinking...

Will be curious how yours works out – have always liked the 601HD and although there are newer, faster, wilder birds, I find 90-95mph quite relaxing, I don’t need something that gets up in the mach numbers…

Did I understand that Zenith still sells a few parts/kits for this model – I may have to inquire…

I dont trust the specified numbers. I have seen 110mph in discussions with a 100 hp 912. I will put a viking 130 hp engine in mine. People say the limiting factor is the wing design - increased speed just increases drag. But no one has ever put a 130 hp high torque engine in it. It will be fun to see the numbers. Unfortunately, my airplane wont be complete for another several years. I agree that I wanted a faster airplane, but since I’ll be flying sport pilot rules anyway, and since I…

The 601 HD design is supposed to be lmited to 115 hp, so I’ll keep the V-130 to max 5000 rpm at which the output is 115 hp. We’ll see.....
i am looking for a faster plane i fly a ch701 c/w 80hp 912 now.. and am getting 90mph cruse... what you are saying is the 601hd with 100hp 912s will only do 10mph faster....

i was looking at the web site and they are claiming 120mph... ???? who do i trust

Aint that the truth; too bad we're not closer! Seems like a lot of Zodiac owners are in the San Francisco and surrounding areas. I only know of one person in my area, he is building a 601 xlb. And this is one of the busiest GA areas in the country! One guy owns a 750 at Corona but that is not what I'm going for. One RV-12 at Flabob, but it looks like he built it 2 months.
One guy thought that it might have to do with the extremely congested airspace and the constant ATC communications required. 4 international airports in about 40 miles distance and umpteen other municipal airports. It's not really the environment that lets you just get in and fly around the countryside!

I probably will end up going with 601 HD, just because I love the design so much that I will be much more likely to push through obstacles to complete it. I'll be in the DC area to visit my parents in June and Jeff Davidson with the Jabiru outfitted HD model said I could swing by. So I'll start the rudder kit, get a feel for the HD and I can still build any one of the 601 models with the same rudder. We'll see!
Scott, I wish we were closer so could give you some time in my 601XL; I think you would find it really easy to fly. I do understand your apprehension, though.

The CH750 Cruzer probably flies more like Cessnas than the Zodiacs, although all of the Zenith models have a reputation as great handling, easy to fly airplanes.
