Anyone flying a 701 behind a 2200? Considering this engine for my build.

I built mine in 2004, the engine was a lot different then.

I'm satisfied with the choice at that time, the performance is fine for my mission. Original 1st choice was Diamond AE110R rotary which never became available. I might have dodged a bullet as their AE75R has serious issues. The 701 needs to be light which is easy with the 2200 and wood prop, I have the battery fwd on the firewall and still end up with cg close to the aft limit line. With long range tanks it doesnt take much crew weight to reach the max gross. 

Because Jabiru is across the pond for me, cost was about half that of a Rotax after adding installation items and composite prop.

If I needed a replacement, it would probably be a D-motor, partly to retain the direct drive simplicity also the engine mount fits. I have 550 hrs on my 2200 and its only needed a set of rings, but exhaust valves were replaced on spec at the same time. I use a fine pitch prop for climb, so the engine is not overly loaded - cruise 2900 - 3100rpm.

The Jabiru is into gen4 engines and if the track record is OK that might be a consideration.

No doubt you will have heard the issues reported on mid prioduction Jabirus but that hasnt been the experience in NZ or USA. The factory blames owner maintenance but in NZ the major failures have been to dealer airframe installations and / or commercially operated and maintained examples

Does the generation of the 2200 make a difference ? What were you issues with it?

What were your issues with them, and what generation motor are yours?

seriously take a look at Vikings new 90hp for the 701 would suit really nice and price is far better than Rotax

No thank you, the smaller engine is out of a Mitsubishi marriage, and has plastic crank, and rod bearings. Dealerships do not rebuild them, but consider the motor disposable. Disturbing conversation with those viking folks, as well. Not an option for me. But thanks for the info.

How about Hirth 3703. 100HP 88lbs of torque, about 130 pounds without radiator?

I would prefer a 4 stroke,  80-100 h.p., lots of production models, light weight,and reliable with at least 1000 hrs t.b.o. Oh yeah, reasonably priced. Think I'm asking too much? I am not afraid to build a ea-81 with a lot of aluminum parts, and light weight parts. I have four of these engines.

mitsubishi mirage 

I have a 701 with a 2200 engine and am very happy with it so far. (Around 4 weeks so far) I mostly fly it solo , but my dirt strip is at 4500ft in Arizona. Solo with full fuel I can get off in around 500ft on a cool day (50 60 deg.) Climb seems to be around 500-600fpm. (Bad vsi installed) I have re-jetted the main down to 235 and at this Alt my egt's are still in the 1200's. May go down one or two steps to get better power. Watch your engine temps and I think it would be a great power plant especially the newer models that got rid of the external oil lines to the heads.
