<p>When I built my STOL 750 about 9 years ago, the Cruzer did not exist. I had a 2100' turf strip and all my buddies had strips at least as long. So, not needing "superSTOL" capabilities, nonetheless I was impressed with the solid, all-metal construction of the STOL 750, the unparalleled visibility, and decided to build one!</p>

<p>I had previously flown a STOL 750 both slats-on and slats-off, so during Phase 1, I tested my 750 in both configurations. I later decided to remove the slats, add StolSpeed VG's, and did some clean-ups with fairings, 600 series tires, etc. to enhance the cruise speed - eventually ending up with a solid 82+ kts cruise. I put about 600+ hrs on the 750 in that configuration and loved every minute of it!</p>

<p>HOWEVER, it seems STOL is getting more popular by the minute, and I'm not flying cross-country as much as i used to, so while at the Zenith Homecoming in Mexico, MO, recently, I decided to enhance the plane's STOL performance by re-installing the slats and installing bigger tires when I got home. Roger, the demo pilot at Zenith, is a very poor salesman! ;>) Instead of convincing me I needed to build a Super Duty, etc., he said, "You don't need to build another airplane - if you re-install the slats, it'll be like a whole new airplane!"</p>

<p>When I returned home from the Zenith Homecoming, I re-installed the slats, put 21" tires on the mains and the 800 series Carlisle on the nose, and got re-acquainted with my STOL 750! It was like getting back on a bicycle - it all came back to me! On my first flight, I flew up to KCSV (Crossville, TN) and proceeded to land right on the numbers. It was a fairly long taxi to the first turn-off! Some wag in the pattern broke in on the radio and said, "Next time, just land it on the ramp and save the long taxi!" LOL!</p>

<p>So, I'm back into re-discovering the joys of STOL!</p>

<p>My kids gave me a GoPro Hero 5 Black for Christmas, and during an episode of "cabin fever," I decided to fabricate an external mount for my STOL 750. I had seen a similar, commercially available mount with a cam lever bolt that allowed for quick installation on a tie-down ring without tools, so I decided to make my own version:</p>

<p>I happened to have a piece of 3/16" 6061 that was bent 90 degrees. I drilled it for the mounting bolts, powder coated it, and glued rubber pads to the opposing clamping faces so it would grip the tie-down ring securely. An economical source for lever-cam clamping bolts are bicycle seat post clamp bolts that can be obtained for about $6. I put a rubber washer under the nut, and once the nut is run down snug, actuating the cam lever seems to provide just the right amount of tension. For safety, I cross-drilled the bolt and inserted a locking clip. I also drilled a small hole through the entire assembly and once in place on the tie-down ring, fasten a zip tie through the hole. In the event the bolt broke, this would keep the entire assembly from departing the airplane! The ball joint camera mount was about $16 on Amazon and works great. It allows for 360 degrees of swivel and also a large angle up and down. I have an aluminum GoPro case to hold filters (neutral density to stop rolling-shutter prop effects and an inexpensive UV filter to protect the lens and ND filter). The case's lanyard is zip-tied to the mount as an extra security measure.</p>

<p>The mount is very secure, but the camera does vibrate slightly in some conditions, but not in-flight - when it does vibrate, it is not noticeable on the video, probably due to image stabilization?). I plan to shorten the mount by cutting down the long arm and reduce the moment-arm of the camera and this should lessen any tendency to vibration.</p>

<p>I deliberately included the FLG in the shot as I have Zenith's new "donut" suspension system and wanted to see it in action on my turf strip and also observe if there were any adverse vibrations in my front wheel "mud flap" that keeps the 750's belly clean.</p>

After all, white belly airplane owners work very hard to develop the correct "patina" of evenly distributed dust, dirt, and exhaust stains ... and if carefully done and evenly distributed, you can "almost" convince someone that it is not dirty, but rather it is "off-white!"</p>

<p>HOWEVER, when that darned naked nose wheel treks across wet grass - it sprays the belly with droplets that absolutely ruins the "patina" with big ugly streaks and splotches! And we won't even mention what happens if you hit mud, or worse yet, a cow pile!</p>

<p>So, I recently noted on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENT6NCwjGXQ&feature=youtu.be" target="_blank" rel="noopener">John Heather's first engine start video</a> that he had a mud flap on his nose wheel and shamelessly copied it, with modifications:</p>

<p>Since I had down-sized my tires to 600x6x15's, I had plenty of room between the tire and the fork to mount the L's on the inside of the forks. I used .040 fabricated L's with doubler L's under the front 4" of the L. The flap is .063. On John Heather's flap, the L's are mounted "upside down" relative to mine, but give him a break ... he is in Australia (aka Down Under)! ;>) OK, the truth is he had to mount his on the outside of his Cruzer's forks for clearance purposes and therefore the L's <em>have</em> to be "upside down" to have a flange facing the exterior of the fork.</p>

<p>The entire assembly was brushed and clear-coated with <a href="https://www.everbritecoatings.com/cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ProtectaClear</a> metal coating. I like this coating for small jobs as you can brush it with a foam brush but it is self-leveling so you get a nice finish and, it seems more durable than rattle-can clear coat. I used it on the fork and landing gear legs and it has held up well as you can see on that fork after 5+ years and 500+ hours!</p>
<p></p>
<p>The flap is slightly angled downward so that it will be parallel to the slip stream in normal flight attitude. I doubt it will cause much drag as it rides in the area shielded by the tire. We've had near-daily rains lately, but of course, as soon as I finished this it quit raining! So, a follow-up will be in order when wet weather returns. I've no doubt it will work well as many planes have similar flaps.</p>
